๐Ÿ“– Fasting FAQs

Does swallowing saliva break the fast? โ–ผ

Swallowing your own saliva does not break the fast according to the consensus of scholars. It is natural and unavoidable. However, you should avoid swallowing phlegm, mucus, or any external substance intentionally.

The Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, and Hanbali schools all agree that saliva is pure and does not invalidate the fast.

What if I eat or drink forgetfully? โ–ผ

If you eat or drink while fasting because you forgot you were fasting, your fast remains valid. This is based on the hadith: "Whoever forgets he is fasting and eats or drinks, let him complete his fast, for it is Allah who fed him and gave him drink." (Bukhari and Muslim)

You should stop immediately upon remembering and continue your fast. No makeup (qada) is required.

Can I use miswak or toothpaste while fasting? โ–ผ

Miswak: Using miswak (toothstick) is sunnah and recommended throughout the day, even while fasting. The Prophet ๏ทบ used miswak while fasting.

Toothpaste: Most scholars permit toothpaste as long as you are careful not to swallow any. However, some scholars recommend using it before noon or using miswak instead to avoid any risk. If you accidentally swallow toothpaste, your fast is still valid but you should be more careful.
